The British trio Muse is back and better than ever. With their newest single, “Hexagons,” they are showing the world that they still have the same energy they had back in 1994. The fourth single from their upcoming album, The Wow! The Signal, shares the same old-school vibe as some of their most successful work.
After releasing the first three singles from the new album, “Cryogen,” “Be With You,” and “Unraveling,” the band slowly began revealing “Hexagons” by sharing five different QR codes across six cities, launching a major treasure hunt for their community. Sydney, New York City, Paris, Los Angeles, Mexico City, and London each featured outdoor displays that revealed a different excerpt of the song. When combined, the full track could be discovered.
Musically, “Hexagons” feels like a direct conversation with the band's past, featuring dense electronic elements and an atmosphere that recalls the album Origin of Symmetry, released in 2001. It also carries the theatrical grandiosity present on Black Holes and Revelations from 2006. The track builds gradually before exploding into a dramatic chorus led by the iconic voice of Matt Bellamy.
Additionally, the band stated in a press release following the album announcement that they are exploring “a mix of cosmic mystery, existential hope, and the exhilarating possibility of contact with something far greater than ourselves.” This theme aligns with the album’s title, which references the famous Wow! signal, an unusual radio transmission detected in 1977 that prompted an astronomer to write the word “Wow!” beside the signal data.
With four singles now released, fans feel that the group is attempting to balance the futuristic, technological side of their sound with the strong emotional intensity that defined many of their most successful releases.
