Throughout her career, Willow has explored various genres and styles of music. Moving on from her teen pop stardom, she began experimenting with indie R&B and psychedelic soul on her 2015 debut album ARDIPITHECUS. Just five months prior, she released her album empathogen, which delivered a sophisticated blend of progressive jazz and soul-rock. She carries on this sophisticated and unique sound in her latest project, The Thread. Across 10 tracks, the album weaves together themes of spirituality and a deep reverence for nature, all elevated by an intricate, soulful jazz composition.
Her standout track, "She's My Religion," surrounds the archetype of the Divine Mother, beautifully blending sounds of acoustic guitar and Willow's breathy background vocals that harmonize with her lead voice. Her lyrics honor the earth's raw power: "She's adorned in constellations/Kissing her skin/Each star is a quiet warning/Nature always wins." This song celebrates the beauty and chaotic force of the earth.
For her track "Talk on the Hill," Willow drew inspiration from the podcast The Telepathy Tapes, which explores consciousness and non-traditional modes of communication. Her abstract ideas are channeled through the lyrics, "Can you show me now? Can you teach me to talk on the hill?" Willow treats her instruments and voice as tools for spiritual transformation in her songs. Her track "The Thread" further advances the topic of communication by referencing the invisible "thread" that connects every soul across the universe. Following the narrative of the bond between people, "Unconditional" explores the themes of devotion and the pursuit of love that embraces all flaws, expressed in her lyrics, "I am not concerned, I take no offense... if you need someone, want somebody."
Beyond interpersonal relationships, Willow turns her attention toward mindfulness and human purpose. Her track "The Present Moment" is about intuitive presence and staying grounded in the now, with Willow singing, "I know we don't really got a lot of time, But it's all right, we'll spend it wisely." Meanwhile, in her song "Bone Collector," she focuses on holding on to memories and heritage in her lyrics, "I'll keep what's left... and wear your memory on my chest," a line that serves as a reminder that past experiences and people help shape who we are today.
Ultimately, The Thread is an artistic combination of the different musical eras of Willow's career. With her R&B origins and her current mastery of jazz and soul, she creates an album that feels grounded to the earth while exploring other avenues of spirituality and abstract ideas.
