Long before they were trading impossibly fast solos on the same stage, Joe Satriani and Steve Vai were bound by something far more foundational than virtuosity: a teacher and his student. That mentor-student relationship was as clear as ever during their Orlando stop on SatchVai’s first-ever U.S. tour, the Surfing With The Hydra Tour, at Hard Rock Live Orlando, where the two played off each other with the kind of chemistry that only comes from years of history. Backed by drummer Kenny Aronoff, bassist Marco Mendoza, and guitarist Pete Thorn, what started as lessons decades ago came full circle on stage, turning the show into an assertion of their pure ability and a claim to being among the best electric guitar maestros to walk the earth.

As the crowd gathered, openers Animals as Leaders took the stage and delivered a performance defined by instrumental prog metal, handpicked by Satriani due to their mutual admiration for each other’s work. Fans in the crowd were packed for this performance, donning merch from the D.C.-based band and roaring for them to play their fan-favorite and critically acclaimed track, “Physical Education.”

As their set ended, fans were given a short intermission where more and more fans seemed to appear, filling the seats of the coliseum-themed venue. Then, lo and behold, the lights dimmed, and on the screen appeared a humorous pre-show video of Satch and Vai being scolded for their small fingers by some sort of executive over the tour, demanding their shows needed more—more action, more movement, more… dancing.

As their latest single, “Dancing,” hit the stage, the crowd became vibrant. The venue lit up with lasers, bright lights, and the fantastic sounds of Satriani and Vai shredding their respective guitars. The lead-up was a perfect representation of the showmanship the pair bring to the stage and their awareness of what their fans are expecting to see.

The pair proceeded to play their latest singles, “I Wanna Play My Guitar” and “The Sea of Emotion, Pt. 1,” a clear nod to the emotional current running through the night. A rare moment saw Mendoza take the mic and sing the vocals originally laid down by Glenn Hughes. The venue was lively, the audience was captivated, and Satch and Vai were as excited as ever to be on the main stage playing their new material to an energized crowd.

After the duo finished their set of collaborative songs, they proceeded to take turns in the spotlight, playing the songs that got them where they are today. Starting off with Vai, he hit the stage with his newer solo work, including “Zeus in Chains” and “Little Pretty.” He showed off his ability and progression throughout his career as he took the stage and hyped the crowd for what would come next. The double-song duel of “Ice 9” and “Crying Machine” saw the swapping of licks and blending of styles in a way only these two could.

The set then switched over to Satriani, who started his set with the classics that saw him become a 15-time Grammy nominee and one of the most respected guitarists of all time. Satriani was loving every minute of his performance as fans lifted their hands in the air with rock-on symbols, showing their admiration for the shredding virtuoso. This was especially seen during “Surfing with the Alien,” part of the inspiration behind the tour’s name itself, a moment that fully embraced the tour’s namesake and left the crowd mesmerized with emotion and disbelief at the pure ability of one man and a guitar.

This led straight into the second half of the tour’s namesake, and arguably the most awaited moment of the night, as Vai took the stage once more and the crowd built anticipation for the 36-string creation, the Hydra. As a guitar tech brought out the ominously covered stand, fans muttered under their breath the simple words, “it has arrived.” Vai took the stage once more, certain of the reaction he would receive, and he was right. He pulled off the dark cover in a magician-like fashion to unveil the glorious monstrosity before taking on “Teeth of the Hydra.” As he began to play, the crowd was in awe. Whether seasoned guitarists or casual listeners, it was impossible not to recognize the talent on display. It was a scene of surprise, excitement, and curiosity at the intricacies behind wielding such an instrument. But even this spectacle was not the climax of the night.

Satch and Vai began to play the songs they knew the fans were yearning for. Satriani played his somewhat self-titled “Satch Boogie,” a sentiment on the style curated by Satriani himself, while Vai followed with the ever-loved “Always With Me, Always With You.” As the band finished their sets, they prepared for the roar of the crowd chanting for more. With that, the encore arrived, and fans were given the certainty that they had received the show of a lifetime—one coated in talent, ability, and pure showmanship from two lifelong friends.
