On February 4th, Modest Mouse played an intimate show at ZeyZey Miami as a pre-show warmup ahead of their Ice Cream Float cruise residency. The last-minute set gave fans a rare chance to see the band up close in a relaxed, rehearsal-style environment before they set sail the next day.

The Venue

Zeyzey Miami is an intimate, versatile space that captures a unique “underground backyard” aesthetic. The Modest Mouse performance felt less like a traditional concert and more of an exclusive secret concert. The venue layout, combined with the band’s presence, created an environment where the line between spectator and performer blurred, feeling as if the audience was invited to sit in on a private rehearsal, witnessing the band’s raw performance and cheering them on as personal friends as opposed to strangers. Allowing audience members to be close both physically and emotionally to the performers.

The Audience

The crowd was very engaging, creating an electric energy that bounced off each corner of the venue. The sense of community was undeniable, especially during the band’s frequent interactions with audience members. Everyone present from die-hard, long- term fans to close acquaintances, everyone present fully immersed and entranced in the moment, feeding off the band's energy and performance.

History

The origins of Modest Mouse are rooted just outside of Seattle, where a small family video store served as the meeting ground for singer/guitarist Isaac Brock and bassist Eric Judy. Their friendship grew out of a shared passion for music and frequent trips to local shows. After meeting drummer Jeremiah Green at a heavy metal concert, the trio solidified their bond and formed the band. Green remained a core part of Modest Mouse’s sound for decades before his passing in 2022, and the band has since continued performing with a new drummer. To maintain a distinct identity and avoid being grouped into the established Seattle scene, they intentionally associated themselves with the smaller town of Issaquah, Washington.

Review

Modest Mouse’s Miami shows were a spontaneous addition to their schedule, acting as a “warmup” or rehearsal for their upcoming “Ice Cream Float” cruise tour, beginning on February 5th. This set was filled with personal stories, lighthearted jokes, that made the night feel like a conversation between the band and the crowd. At one point they even mentioned buying bumper stickers with a similar design as a fan’s shirt.

The band’s genuine concern for their fans was on full display when an audience member was not feeling well near the front; the group immediately stopped the set in order to make sure she was helped and attended to. The lighting was also a highlight and unique, fun, and engaging throughout the whole night.

While there were truly captivating moments, a majority of the set was played back- to back, which felt steady but did not always stand out. Because of this Sonder rated this show ⅘ stars. This level of care and engagement highlights the deep appreciation Modest Mouse has for its community, making it a collaborative experience instead of just a concert.
