Karol G kicked off her massive Viajando Por el Mundo Tropitour with a sold-out show at Chicago’s Soldier Field on July 24, a concert so wildly anticipated that high demand prompted the addition of a second night in Chicago the following day. Beginning with her success back in 2018, when she won the Latin Grammy for Best New Artist, her career has since skyrocketed, and she has accomplished many other milestones, including becoming the first woman to top the U.S. Billboard 200 with an all-Spanish album. The Colombian singer headlined Coachella earlier this year, where she teased this tour. Karol G delivered everything fans expected and more, with an extraordinary display of diverse Latino culture, stunning visuals, pyrotechnics, and even the live debut of her latest single, "Matadora," at the end of her almost three-hour performance.


After an opening set from Elena Rose, Karol G officially took the stage at 9 p.m. with an incredible cave-like visual display. A captivating narration opened the show, following the story of a girl born into a society that repressed her. She later reclaims her strength alongside the support of the women around her, ending with the statement "Latina Foreva," which led into her iconic song and officially set the theme for the rest of the night, showcasing Latino culture and pride. The cave setting symbolizes where the story begins, and the show later evolves through different eras and styles of Latin music and culture, emphasizing the strength and generations of traditions that run deep. She followed her grand opening with fan favorites including "Un Gatito Me Llamó" and "Qlona." Most of the sequence of the show followed her Coachella set, with a few additional songs.


For Act Two, the stage became an explosion of colors and tropical themes, with Karol G decked out in a feathery outfit as she sang "Tropicoqueta." This part of her performance also pays homage to Mexican culture, with a mariachi band performing "Negrita de Mis Pesares" before transitioning into "Ese Hombre es Malo." Committing to the tropical theme, she even rode a massive parrot across the center stage while performing "Papasito."


The momentum grew from there as a thundering drum sequence paved the way for her iconic song "Ivonny Bonita," where Karol G emerged atop a row of drums mirroring her album cover. She later brought the production to the middle stage, featuring a large pool. This set the scene for her song "Bandida Entrenada," a catchy track with elements of Brazilian phonk. The show continued in the water as it escalated into a full-blown party, raising the energy of the choreography with one of her biggest hits, "Ojos Ferrari."


For the final act of the show, she displayed elements of salsa in songs like "Tusa" and "Bichota" before transitioning into a lively merengue style with "Si Antes Te Hubiera Conocido." The blend of guitar and different instruments and musical styles throughout the show was an incredible demonstration of the many Latin influences that shape her music. She brought the show to a triumphant end with a beautiful final celebration of Latino culture during "Viajando Por el Mundo," with dancers carrying flags representing countries across Latin America. To cap off the night, she gave Chicago the first live performance of her new single, "Matadora."
