On this day back in 1997, Scott Moorhead, more famously known as Jeff Buckley, had his career cut short in a tragic swimming accident in the Mississippi River.

Born on November 17, 1966, in Anaheim, California, folk singer and songwriter Jeff Buckley had his life come to a short end at only 30 years of age when he tragically drowned in the Wolf River Harbor on May 29, 1997.

While some renowned musicians are marked by decades of excellent work, producing platinum albums and remarkable hits for their fans, others, such as Buckley, have a much shorter, but yet successful, career span, leaving a massive impact and legacy that goes beyond their music.

The son of Tim Buckley, a folk and jazz singer-songwriter from the 1960s and 1970s, Scott Moorhead decided to go by his birth-given name, Jeff, found on his birth certificate, and to carry on his father's legacy. Even though they had only met once when Jeff was 8, after the death of his father due to an overdose in 1975, he decided to go by Jeff Buckley.

His first and only studio album, Grace, released in 1994, received mixed reviews and reached No. 147 on Rolling Stone's Top 500 Albums of All Time. With his version of Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen included in the 500 Greatest Songs, as well as having the same hit inducted into the American Library of Congress National Recording Registry in 2014. And this year, Buckley was nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

During the process of working on his second album, My Sweetheart the Drunk, he was living in Memphis, Tennessee. On the night of May 29, Buckley and his friend Keith Foti were driving around Memphis when they decided to take a stroll near the Mississippi River at the Wolf River Harbor. While on shore, Jeff Buckley decided to go for a swim despite Foti’s constant warnings.

According to Foti, Buckley went down the river singing Whole Lotta Love while backstroking into the channel. While swimming, he was caught in the wake of a passing boat and pulled under the current. After a short period of time, Foti realized that Buckley had disappeared. After an extensive search with no success, it wasn't until June 4 that his body was spotted by passengers on the American Queen Riverboat.

“Scottie,” as his family used to call him, died six months short of his 31st birthday, similarly to his father, who passed away from a drug overdose at age 28.

At the time, Buckley was one of the most promising and bright young artists in music. The sales of his debut album Grace increased following his death, as did his popularity. Even though he passed away, his legacy carried on by being cited as an influence by singers such as Matt Bellamy from Muse and Thom Yorke of Radiohead.

Now, in 2026, nearly three decades after his tragic accident, Jeff Buckley earned his first Billboard Hot 100 hit when Lover, You Should've Come Over reached No. 97 on the charts. The gut-wrenching ballad from his one and only studio album, Grace, went viral thanks to TikTok and the series Love Story, which portrays the romance between John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy.
