Karol G released her newest album, No Me Arrepiento de Sentir Tanto, right in the middle of her tour, shortly after teasing the high-energy single Matadora during the first show. This new project marks a dramatic artistic pivot from her previous album, Tropicoqueta, transitioning from a bright and vibrant theme celebrating Latin culture to a moody, melancholic exploration of heartbreak.

While Tropicoqueta was an energetic album focused on Latino pride, her newest release adopts a somber blue-themed visual to match its mood. The album centers around the emotional aftermath and stages of grief following her breakup from singer Feid. We also see a clear shift in her musical styles. Where Tropicoqueta heavily relied on danceable, hype genres such as phonk, salsa and merengue, No Me Arrepiento de Sentir Tanto introduces elements of moody alternative pop and even ’80s synth-rock sounds. Karol G doesn’t fail to make her newest project stand out, collaborating with some high-profile artists, including Drake and Bruno Mars.

The album’s opening track, Te Llevas To’, immediately sets the tone by expressing anger and post-breakup resentment. She conveys her feelings in the lyrics, “guarde de ti, mis ganas de llorar… te llevas to’ menos mi dignidad,” meaning “I kept my urges to cry from you, you left with everything except my dignity.” She continues to sing about being haunted by memories of her past lover but closes the track with sharp insults at them, reflecting both the sorrow of lost love and the harsh realization of how imperfect the relationship was.

As the tracklist unfolds, Karol G continues to take us through her mixed feelings about the breakup. In Maybe, she reflects on what could have been if things were done differently: “Tal vez en otra vida, maybe,” translating to “maybe in another life.” Meanwhile, her collaboration with Bruno Mars in the ’80s-inspired duet Still marks her first fully English track, focusing on the theme of nostalgia and eternal affection with the lyrics, “Even after all the fire turned to ash, I still carry a spark for you.”

As the record continues, her theme continues to shift from anger and reclaiming power back to fond memories and mourning the relationship, perfectly mirroring the emotional rollercoaster of enduring a breakup. Matadora serves as a bold, energetic standout from the rest of her songs on the album, with high-energy beats celebrating female sensuality and unapologetic self-expression. Shortly after comes the song Si Lo Ven, where she talks about hiding her grief and pretending to be okay with the lyrics, “Si lo ven sonriendo, díganle que yo también aprendí a mentir” (“If you see him smiling, tell him I also learned how to lie”).

Later on, ¿Con Quién Andará? talks about the feelings of jealousy as she wonders who her past lover is with right now. She asks herself the question, “Me pregunto si a ella le dirás las mismas promesas que me dijiste a mí” (“I wonder if you’ll tell her the same promises you told me”).

Overall, No Me Arrepiento de Sentir Tanto is a stark contrast to its predecessor. Using her music to express her vulnerability during a tough stage in her life, Karol G shows us that she isn’t afraid to evolve alongside her real-life experiences. By fully stepping into the journey of grief and healing, she delivers one of her most honest and compelling artistic works.
