As the metalheads of Central Florida seemingly rose from their graves and descended upon the Colosseum-inspired walls of Hard Rock Live Orlando, Killswitch Engage and Machine Head brought their tour to the City Beautiful for a night that brought together several corners of the metal world. Joined by Virginia crossover thrash veterans Iron Reagan and Colorado thrashers Havok, the bill stretched from old-school extreme metal and hardcore punk to crossover thrash and metalcore. By the time the lights went down, the venue felt less like a concert hall and more like a gladiatorial amphitheater under siege, with thrash fans, hardcore kids, and metalcore diehards all finding themselves in the same pit, battling through circle pits, walls of death, and flying bodies.

As Havok stormed the stage, the crowd immediately began headbanging as the first pit of the night started to take shape. It would only grow larger as the night went on. The band from Denver, Colorado, played some of their most enticing songs, with “Point of No Return,” “Prepare for Attack,” and “Fifth Generation Warfare” acting as standouts to a relentlessly engaged audience.

Up next was Iron Reagan. The Richmond, Virginia, supergroup ripped through a 15-song set featuring “Miserable Failure,” “Make It Ugly,” and fan favorite “Your Kid’s an Asshole.” Between songs, vocalist Tony Foresta joked with the crowd about his pre-show lark at the adjacent Margaritaville, saying he almost missed the show. He then followed by stating that he made it and proceeded to tell fans to “spin in fucking circles” and to “show the posers here how to crash.” The crowd responded immediately, turning the pit into a relentless whirlwind of crowd surfers as it grew larger and larger.

After two sets of heavy music and a crowd that would not stop moshing, Machine Head entered the stage and brought those farther back racing to the front to get a look at the groove metal veterans.

Opening with the explosive “Imperium,” the Bay Area metal band took full command of the room, with frontman Robb Flynn feeding off the electric energy of the packed venue. Songs such as “Ten Ton Hammer” kept the circle pits in a frenzy, with fans screaming every lyric back at the stage. Crowd surfers continuously made their way across the floor, while a massive wall of death opened through the center of the pit, creating one of the most intense moments of the night. By the end of their set, Machine Head had the entire venue in hysteria.

With the crowd exhausted from three intense sets, Killswitch Engage shot a bullet of energy into the hearts of each and every fan. Opening with “Fixation on the Darkness,” the Massachusetts metalcore pioneers immediately had the entire venue under their command, as fans sang along to every word and launched into nonstop circle pits. Vocalist Jesse Leach's powerful screams had the devoted crowd responding to every word. After that, fan favorites such as “The End of Heartache” and “Rose of Sharyn” created some of the loudest moments of the night.

As the concert neared its conclusion, Jesse Leach made an announcement to the crowd: it was drummer Justin Foley’s 50th birthday. Taking a moment to celebrate the drummer’s milestone while a slideshow played in the background, he invited the audience to wish him a happy birthday. After the celebration, the band jumped straight into “My Curse” and “My Last Serenade,” ending the night with the highest energy levels of the evening. As the pit reached its peak beneath the Colosseum-inspired walls of Hard Rock Live Orlando, bruises were worn as badges of honor, banana suits served as armor, and vocal cords strained from shouting along to Killswitch Engage, Machine Head, Iron Reagan, and Havok. Thrashers, hardcore kids, and metalcore diehards alike left exhausted and exhilarated after a night that brought every corner of the metal world together on the same floor.
