As of November 14th, 2025, Sonder Media is proud to share that we are now an official supporter of Paul McCartney’s Meat Free Monday organisation. The mission behind Meat Free Monday is easy, take one day out of the week to eat plant-based and see the world around us change! It is a small action that can help the planet, support animals, and better each one of our own lives.
Meat Free Monday's Founding
Meat Free Monday officially began in 2009, founded by Sir Paul McCartney and his daughters, Stella and Mary. Their idea came from a major 2006 United Nations report that explained how raising animals for food creates high levels of greenhouse gases and uses large amounts of land, water, and energy. The report suggested reducing meat consumption, even once a week, could benefit the environment in such a way that would lead to a better planet for us all.
Linda McCartney’s influence was also a large part of the movement’s foundation. Linda was known for her vegetarian cooking, her food brand, and her commitment to animal welfare. Her values shaped the McCartney family’s ideas on food and compassion, and her legacy helped guide the spirit of Meat Free Monday.
The campaign launched in St. James’s Park in London, where environmental groups, chefs, families, students, and well-known supporters gathered under the same vision. The goal of the launch was to show that taking action for the planet does not have to be complicated and that one day a week can make a real difference.
From there, Meat Free Monday grew into a global movement. Schools began using it to teach students about food systems and sustainability. Universities added meat-free dining options. Restaurants created special Monday menus and used the campaign as a way to introduce people to plant-based dishes. Families at home treated Mondays as a chance to try new meals and learn more about the impact of their food choices.
The organisation continued to expand by working with educators and chefs. They created free classroom materials and partnered with well-known chefs to release simple plant-based recipes.
Meat Free Monday has achieved significant environmental progress by helping people understand how reducing meat consumption can lower carbon emissions, save water, protect forests, and lessen pressure on the planet. Many businesses and public institutions adopted Meat Free Monday as part of their sustainability goals, showing how far the movement’s influence has reached.
Today, Meat Free Monday stands as one of the most successful food and climate campaigns in the world. Its message continues to spread, inspiring people everywhere to take small steps that lead to meaningful change. What started as one family’s idea has become a global effort shaping how communities, schools, homes, and businesses think about food and the future of our planet.
Meat Free Monday and Sonder
When Sonder first learned about Meat Free Monday, we immediately knew we wanted to be involved. Before long, we were offered the opportunity to become an official supporter of the campaign. With our mission to inspire young people through music and storytelling, joining this movement felt natural. Meat Free Monday uses the platform of one of the world’s most influential voices to spread a message that reaches far beyond any song or lyric.
Below is a quote I shared for their website at meatfreemondays.com:
“Meat Free Monday not only spreads awareness about how simple it is to better our lives and the world around us, but it does so by involving powerful change-makers who inspire people to do better one Monday at a time. At Sonder Media, our mission is to support young voices and help them inspire others. Together, both of our missions show the youth that small choices can lead to real change.” – Jade Read, Sonder Media President
